Europe Travel in 2025: New Entry Rules You Need to Know
Traveling to Europe in 2025? Here’s What You Need to Know About EES and ETIAS
If you’re planning a European vacation in 2025, there are a couple of new travel requirements you should be aware of. They’re not complicated, but they do add a few extra steps—so let’s break it down in a way that actually makes sense.
What is the Entry/Exit System (EES)?
First up, the Entry/Exit System (EES). This applies to all non-EU travelers and is essentially an automated way for the EU to track who enters and exits. Instead of stamping passports, everything will be recorded digitally, including fingerprints and facial recognition.
What do you need to do?
Not much—this happens automatically when you arrive in your first EU country. No pre-registration, no paperwork. Just be prepared for a slightly longer process the first time you go through it.
What is ETIAS?
Next, we have ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System). If you’re from a visa-exempt country—like the U.S., UK, Canada, or Australia—this applies to you. Think of it as a mini visa waiver program, similar to the U.S. ESTA system.
What do you need to do?
Unlike EES, ETIAS requires action before your trip. You’ll need to apply online before traveling to Europe, and I’d recommend doing this a few weeks in advance to be proactive.
- The application is short and simple
- It costs €7 for travelers aged 18-70
- It’s free for everyone else, but you still have to apply
- Once approved, it’s valid for three years or until your passport expires
When Does This Start?
- EES rolls out in early 2025 (exact date still TBD).
- ETIAS will launch about six months after EES begins.
How Will This Impact Travel to Europe?
It’s really just a few extra steps, not a major hurdle. If you’re used to traveling to Europe without extra paperwork, this might feel like a hassle, but in reality, it’s a quick process. Once ETIAS is done, you won’t need to think about it again for three years.
Bottom line: Traveling to Europe will still be easy—you’ll just need to check this off your to-do list before heading to the airport.
